We started #SmallBusinessEveryDay to encourage Canadians to support small businesses from coast to coast, every day, in any way they can.

About the Campaign

#SmallBusinessEveryDay is a year-round initiative that encourages Canadians to support the independent businesses that make their communities unique by keeping their loonies local.  

Launched in 2020, the campaign has now entered its fourth year and is helping shed light on the important role small businesses play in supporting our local economies.

Why Support Local?

Small businesses make life better. They prepare our morning coffee, repair our cars, give our children their first jobs, sponsor our sports teams, support our fundraisers, and so much more; they’re always there for us when we need them. Now it’s our turn to be there for them.

Supporting small has a BIG impact on the local economy. From funding local literacy programs to sponsoring community gardens, donating to food security initiatives and supporting extracurricular activities, when local businesses thrive, they channel their success back into their communities.

Building Community

Supporting Small Business Means Supporting Community

Small business owner from Newfoundland

As a retailer of locally produced gifts and goods, we provide new artisans and makers with advice and assistance about retailing their products, packaging, pricing, customer feedback, sales data, and so on. As a social enterprise, we reinvest 50% of our annual profits back into the community as support for heritage projects and programming throughout Newfoundland and Labrador.

We host author events at no cost to the authors and regularly donate books to local causes. We do our best to make sure that our shelves have books that reflect our beliefs not only in strong communities, but in a more equitable and safer world for all through collective action.

When we are unable to sell a consigned piece of furniture or home accent, we donate it to Habitat for Humanity, local immigrants, or Missions Services. We also donate to Salthaven Animal Rehabilitation Centre and provide numerous other charity events with door prizes throughout the year.

Our business builds community and creates a gathering place for many creative people from our region. We help countless clients develop their abilities and skills that can be shared with others and help to enrich schools and charities.

We take part actively in local activities and fundraisers, as a sponsor for local hockey teams, the athletic club, the senior’s club, the snowmobile club, the ATV club, the dance club, the beautification committee, and contests of all sorts, in addition to the discounts we sometimes offer at local events. The list goes on and on!

We help support local literacy programs for younger ages through a local group called OBLT. We also support our local SPCA and BC Cancer. Our customers can donate their book credits to these organizations as well. Last year we donated 200 new books to OBLT for their new parents' program.

We offer a Trade-in Program where families can trade in outgrown baby or infant clothing for a $20 store credit. Items that are not able to go on the sales floor are donated back into the community to families in need. We are also a Cloth for a Cause warehouse and provide our community with cloth diapers at no cost.

My boutique has been supporting local jewelry makers for 20 years. I intentionally buy locally made gifts for my store and promote all local artisans and makers. Any leftover new clothes I donate to the women's shelter. One important segment in my business is gift wrapping, 100% of the proceeds from gift wrapping get donated to the local food bank.
